Default Leaving Lease for NYC Stuytown

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York City.

    Hello,

I signed a lease, not with the landloard, but with with the people that were leasing the room from Stuyvantsville. So would this be considered a sub-lease or a rental for Stuyvantsville?

Also, I was supposed to stay on the their "lease" till June 30, 2009. However, due to reasons I had to move out, but I did find someone that would take over the lease. Now they are saying, that I am breaking the lease, and they will not give back the deposit.

    Will this hold water?

    Thanks

You're describing a sublease. But you have no magic, mystical right to break a sublease.
