Default Planning on Changing My Last Name

    Hello To All,

I am a widowed permanent resident of the USA. I will take my US Citizenship test sometime the year of 2010. Ive got kids from a US Citizen deceased man and they were born here. My question is,

    1. I am thinking about changing my current last name (from my deceased husband) to my old last name when I was single. Can I do this?

    2. If yes, can I do this BEFORE or AFTER I GET MY U.S. CITIZENSHIP?

    3. If I can do it even before then, how is this going to affect my permanent resident card? Do I need to fill out any form from USCIS or DHS? Will there be any payment? How much?

    4. How this will affect my SSI me and my kids are getting?

    5. I know i have to inform Social Sec for any changes in my name, add or phone. Do I need to change my Soc Sec Card then?

Thank you so much for any help you will share.

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes.
    3. It shouldn't have any effect. If you want your Green Card reissued with a new name, you would file a form I-90 and pay the fee, presently $290.
    4. It shouldn't have any effect.
    5. If you want your Social Security card reissued with your new name, you will petition the SSA to reissue your card with your new name.

Thanks a lot for responding. However, i am a little bit confused on your reply on number 2. YOu said YES...i was asking BEFORE OR AFTER?

The answer to the question of "before or after" is "Yes. You can change it before or after."

In other words, it makes no difference.
