Default Parents Object to 17-Year-Old Dating

My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Florida & Georgia

I am 19 years old and live in Georgia. I have a girlfriend who is 17 years old and lives in Florida. I turned 19 on June 18 and she turned 17 on June 27th. We have been in a relationship for almost 2 years now. Both of our parents knew and approved of the relationship. For some reason her parents disapprove of me lately. Now it has gotten to the point where they want her to stop talking to me and have told me that they will call the cops on me if I dont stop. We only talk on the phone and have not done anything sexual or anything of that sort. My girlfriend is completely a wreck because of her parents decision. Her mom told her if she doesnt stop crying they are going to take her to a mental hospital. And its only been day 2 of her mom saying dont talk to her anymore. I cant even grieve about this all I can keep thinking is what kind of mom would make her daughter break up with her boyfriend and say to her 2 days later that she will get institutionalized if she doesnt stop crying and feeling sad. Her parents are coming up with many excuses for her not to talk to be but excuses aside I would like to know if they can legally do anything here. Can they have me arrested for talking to her on the phone? Is there a law agaisnt that? Thanks for reading.

Who's calling whom? If you're calling her parents' house against their wishes, then yes, they can legally bring charges against you since it's their home and you've been instructed to not call there.

I'm not aware of any law which makes it a crime for you to answer your phone.

Of course, you only have your girlfriend's word to go on that her mother is threatening to institutionalize your girlfriend.

    I'm confused by:
And its only been day 2 of her mom saying dont talk to her anymore.
Is your girlfriend talking to herself? If so, maybe that's your girlfriend's mother's source of concern. Or was that a typo? Or are you a gal boyfriend or something?

Yes, there is. She is their daughter. She is a minor. If they say no, it's no.

Parents do not have to justify their decisions in regards to their minor children to you.

There is always more to the story. I am sure you will be able to figure out the reason they don't like you anymore if you think about it hard enough.

    Regardless, it doesn't matter.

Until the age of 18, children do what their parents tell them to do.... apparently, this includes no longer talking to you.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

No, I meant its been 2 days since her mom told me not to talk to my girlfriend anymore.

    ...Thats what I was thinking.

She said that in front of her obviously, and my girlfriends sister.

I would like to know what law ill be breaking if I do talk to her. I know the she is a minor what her parents say goes but does anyone know specifically what they can get me arrested on?

Again, and I hate to press the question, but who's calling whom? As I said, I'm aware of no law which prohibits you from answering your phone despite who's calling.

I'm aware of no codified statute which makes it a crime for you to talk to anyone who calls you, even if said caller's parents don't wish it.

Now, there is much they can do to her, but filing charges against you for answering your phone, reading a letter, or things of the like will prove exceptionally tricky. Some of the holier-than-thou moralists may tell you that it's illegal, but they'll be able to cite no law which makes that, in and of itself, a crime.

If she's sufficiently close to being 18, it might be wiser to kind of let things hang until then thereby alleviating any consequences she may have to face from her parents. I mean, if what you say is true about her mother threatening to have her institutionalized for being sad about their decision, dear old mom sounds like she can make your girlfriend's life a living hell.

ashman165, thanks for the reply again. She is calling me and texting me. I want to talk to her but I am not the one doing the calling. I am however texting back . What if I give her a cellphone I own. She is 8 months away from being 18. What if she is 18 and they find out we were talking when they said not to after she turned 18. Can they file charges against me for that? Thanks again for your time.
