My question involves guardianship in the State of: California/Washington.
My mother and step father currently have legal guardianship of my niece due to my sister's mental illness. My niece has never been a ward of the state, however my parents have to report to the court annually on my nieces progress.
The housing crisis in California has forced them into foreclosure and we would all like my niece to move to Washington to stay with me. When she informed the court of this, they informed her that an investigation of my home was required.
What is the process for this? Is there any way for my mother to retain guardianship while I manage to care for her through a "Power of Attorney." Can her stay with me be considered an "extended visit?"
