My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.
I'm 19. I was in a small store, and previously I've shoplifted there a couple of times within the last month. Today I got caught stealing a $20 item. But previously I stole items of greater value...around $100 each. They stopped me as I walked out of the store, and asked if I took something I didn't pay for. I confessed and they took me back inside. They searched my bag and there were items in there that I had previously taken from the store without paying for. They made me fill out some paperwork and told me there would be a fine. They asked me if I've ever taken anything else, because if I had then they would call the police, but if not then they would just give me a fine. I was very scared and said no.
My question would be...what are the chances that the store will go back and look at all the old tapes and catch me stealing from before?
Also if they do catch me, how much time would I spend in jail?
