    Default Didn't Realize I Shoplifted

I went shopping with my young child for shoes. I pulled 4 or 5 pairs and we sat there trying them on. I could'nt decide between two pairs, so I tossed them both in the stroller and walked and looked at some more shoes. I finally decided on a pair, and went to pay. I was going to hand the cashier the other pair I did'nt want, but obviously forgot (You should also know that was suddenly in a panic to rush out of there to the nearest bathroom as I am newly pregnant, and felt a strong wave of nausea coming on). Anyway, I paid for the shoes with my credit card and rushed for the facilities.

It was'nt until later that afternoon when I was unloading the car that I realized what I'd done. Not soon after that the phone rang with the store's name on the caller ID. I was entirely too crippled with fear to answer, and spent the rest of the day thinking the cops were going to be knocking on my door any minute.

My main question is, if I go back to the store and reutrn the merchandise will I be arrested? It was an honest mistake, and I'm crippled with guilt. They obviously have my info...are they going to send the cops to my house?? I am terrified asto think what would happen to my baby if they did, and I am much too embarrased to tell my husband what I did.

AM I BETTER OFF RETURNING THE MERCH TO THE STORE, OR SHOULD I WAIT AND SEE IF IT TURNS INTO NOTHING????

When they open the doors you should be there ready to buy the shoes. Have an already typewritten letter explaining what happened. (just in case) Be courteous and if someone gets in your face and pulls a power trip just be contrite and agreeable.

The idea is to pay for the shoes quickly and quietly and have the receipt ready. Just go a cashier and say "I inadvertently walked out with these shoes yesterday." Don't go to the service desk.

After you have the receipt then go to the service desk and explain what happened.

Thank you. I will be there in a couple hours when the store opens, and I made arrangments for child care. It sounds like good advise, but I did'nt want the shoes. I'd rather give them back entirely. Is it too late for that?

Also, it's a small boutique kind of store in a mall. There is only one desk to check out, and usually only one person working there.

As a cashier I am to do three things in this case where I work; 1. refer the person to the service desk and, 2. call the LP office. Then number 3 is call a supervisor over to wait with the shoplifter for security to come.

I took the shoes back this morning and told them what happened. All she did was thank me for bringing them back and that was that. I asked her if I could leave my contact information just in case her manager had any questions, or there was any other problem.

Looks like I lost a night's sleep over nothing. I will definately be more careful and learn to pay attention to what I'm doing next time I go shopping with kids in tow. Thanks for your replies.

I'm really curious about something. Why was someone calling you from the store shortly after you came home with "the goods"??? Did you ever figure that out?

I thought about that, she explained it was a small store so they probably wanted to ask for information they forgot or she forgot something. I can't think of any case where they would want to tip you off.
