My question involves independent contractors in the state of: Arizona

I recently posted a question regarding a non compete that I signed with my previous employer. I really never understood why I was an "employee" when I paid for all my expenses and was 100% paid on commission. Is this a way so that and Employer can enforce a non compete? Also, what if some of my old clients seek me out for my services can I then resume business with them? I have been doing this line of work (print sales) for the last 17 years and this is my only means of income. Would a judge be likely to rule in my favor or my previuos employer?
