My question involves a security deposit in the State of North Carolina. My roommate and I moved into a condominium. I moved in first in the middle of August 2008 and applied by myself. The rent is $665.00 and he charged me a 1 1/2 months security deposit because of my credit ($1,000.00); I paid it. I moved in and it was okay. Then my best friend decided she wanted to move in with me so she had to apply also. He said her credit was bad and charged her $1,000.00 also!!! So now he has $2,000.00 for a security deposit in NC. I've been doing some research and he is only allowed to charge 2 times the rental amount. How do we go about getting our money back??? Do we report him to someone? MAXIMUM RENT IS SUPPOSED TO BE $1,330.00.
