Default Improper Access of Criminal Records

My question involves criminal records for the state of: VA.

I am attempting to sign a new lease. The would be landlord is an Arlington County police officer. I suspect that he has accessed my criminal record in doing a background check.

Is this acceptable practice by an officer? If not, is there any way I can confirm that this took place?

    Thank you.

Anyone willing to pay for a background check can purchase one.

Thanks. I sorta felt like that was the way it works, but I also felt it was borderline unfair/improper/abusing of position. I've heard stories about people at the passport agency getting in trouble for paroozing records - I thought this might be in the same category.

    I appreciate your time.

Many court websites will allow access to court records which in essence will show criminal history. Its not a private matter

Everything said while true exempts* police officers. There has been several high profile examples of police abusing the system.

A police officer stole some weed on a border bust but was recorded by a dash cam. His sentence was enhanced because he had a gun he appealed the added 5 years but lost. In the almost same way (my analogy wasn't as close as I thought but I already wrote it)

The police can't use the database for private purposes. If they used a private service and paid that's OK.

The state trooper who fixed then-Deputy Gov. Dave Cooley’s speeding ticket is being investigated on allegations that he ran unauthorized criminal background checks on private citizens and state employees.
