Default MDOP and Reckless Driving in Michigan

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

My little brother is 17 and was out last Saturday with his friends and preceded to do "lawn jobs" on 3 different lawns. He dropped his friends off and went back home, when the police showed up at the door. He confessed to the crimes and was issued a ticket for:

    1. MDOP (I am not sure the charges, but most likely less than $1000, maybe even less that $200)
    2. Reckless Driving

He has two previous incidences with the police. He received 3 points for a careless driving about 1 year ago and went to court for another careless driving / distracted driving ticket that was dismissed about 6 months ago.

My question is whether or not legal representation is necessary and what the consequences may be. Should my parents have my brother apologize to the families and see if they can settle damages outside of court?

Thank you ahead of time for the time you take to respond to this. The lil Brat needs to learn a lesson for this, but I really hope that it does not ruin any chances that he has in his future.

Be prepared that, lawyer or no, the judge will come down upon lil brother like the proverbial wrath of God.

Tell him not to get too attached to his license. He won't be seeing it for quite a while.

Apologizing should ALWAYS happen... whether or not it will help his case. That would be how adults apologize for poor behavior. It sounds like your brother needs to learn that.

Thank you for the quick response...I think we will have him apologize and pay for / do the manual labor to fix the damages. Hopefully if the victims do not want to pursue the MDOP charge, we can find a lessor alternative...as far as the reckless driving...we know that we can't change that and it might benefit him to have to walk for awhile. Thanks again!

It's the DA that presses charges, whether the victim wants to or not
