My Fiancé has a large tax debt for both fed, and Maine State total of over $200,000 He did not file taxes from 1998 - 2004. I filed his 2005 - 2007 taxes. And from me filing those taxes, They are looking to collect all his back taxes. The Maine State revenue Service issued a garnishment of his wages. He already has back child support garnished, as well as medical, 401k, Ect.. leaving him practically nothing to live on, Not to mention he is head of household with a dependant.
Hiring a tax lawyer is expensive. He owns nothing, not even a checking account. He could never get a loan or anything like that to help. He goes from paycheck to paycheck.
I don't know anything about tax law, or bankruptcy. Would filing bankruptcy help his tax debt? I know it takes 10 years on your credit, But with impossible amount of a tax debt, I'm thinking that would take a lifetime!
