Question My Son's Mother Didn't Pay His Bill, Am I Responsible

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: WA

My son's mother took him into the hospital. She did not submit the paper work and so it was not paid. Now a collection agency is saying I am responsible for the amount eventhough I did not sign for responsibitlity and she and I were never married. Is the collection agency right. Do I have to clean up her mess just because I am his father?

Does your son have health insurance and, if so, who is the subscriber?

At the time my son had state medical under his mother. But she did not give them the paper work at the time of the service. She had a year to do so but didn't.

I don't know the legal ramifications, but my ex tried this crap with me several times. My ex, out of spite, was using non-participating doctors or would just say the kids were not insured and have the bills sent to me; telling the care provider that I was the responsible party.

What I did was explain to my ex that I would happily reimburse her my share of medical bills after receiving copies of all paperwork that shows the charges were properly submitted to insurance and balance was paid. If I received a bill and it didn't go through insurance I sent it back to the care provider with an explanation.

She still tries occasionally; she'll hand me a bill saying that insurance won't pay it. I talk to the insurance company and they tell me it was never submitted, so I give it back to her. Some may think this is rude, but I don't think I should be held responsible for her ignorance.
