Possession Charge in California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: CA
My 18 year-old was recently arrested for HS 11357 (b) possession of marijuana and HS 11377 (a) possession of a "dangerous drug." After being released OR, was given an arraignment date of 09/15/08 (next Monday!) What can we do to prepare for this arraignment? Can we contact a public defender prior to the arraignment? It seems it would be beneficial to know in advance what to expect. Also, I don't see anything on the court calendar; is there a reason why?

Thanks for any advice you can give us. This is her first "incident" of any kind.

An arraignment is a very simple court proceeding, during which the charges are read in open court, the defendant is advised of his or her rights, and the defendant is asked for a plea. Then the court decides if there will be a trial.

Your daughter should plead Not Guilty and ask for a public defender, unless you have the means to hire private counsel prior to that time.
