My question involves criminal law for the state of: Connecticut
I went shopping at night for a few items, the most important being Immodium because I had diarrhea. I went to the self-checkout lane (at a grocery store) and scanned everything but when I wanted to pay, it said they needed to check my age because of an item (apparently cough syrup). The machine would not let me pay. I bagged my stuff and waited. No one came. Then the monitor screen changed to "Do you want to pay at a cashier or scan more items?" I clicked PAY but no receipt came. I went to customer service but no one was there. At this point I felt the diarrhea coming again so I just left. No one stopped me. I don't know if I was followed or my plate written down or caught on camera. I did not use a shopper card. The next day when the store opened I went and asked to speak to the manager and told him what happened and that I needed to pay. I had brought back either the items or the cartons of opened items. I paid cash and did not use a shopper card and he did not ask for ID. I asked, "so we're all set now?"
And he said "yeah, in terms of paying."
My question is this: if they got my plate number either the first or second time, and they reported the incident as theft to the police the night it took place, can I still be charged? Should I just show my receipt if the police show up? Say nothing? Am I just being paranoid?
The amount was for less than $50.
Thanks!
