My question involves judgment recovery in the State of: Alabama / Georgia
A court case has been filed against me, they served my mother, but at the time me and my mother didn't speak often and I didn't have a phone. She lives in Alabama, and I used to be a resident there, but I'm a Georgia Resident now. We're talking now and I've found out a judgment has been made against me.
The only difference is, I know the debt is mine, I just don't have the money. I'm a college student, but I'm over 25 and I haven't been their dependent for a years. I've just graduated undergrad (will be attending graduate) and I may get a good job and be able to pay the 4000 dollars. It's just that it's a 1000 dollar bill that they kept pounding fees on. I tried to pay it at first but then I just gave up when I saw I wasn't going anywhere.
I've been thinking about filing bankruptcy because I've only been able to get mediocre jobs that barely pay for food, gas, ect and I have other bills this may happen to. I don't want to end up owing a bunch of money that I can't afford to pay for. I just don't want to ruin my credit for seven years.
I'm going to use google to try and find out more, but I want to know if you have a suggestion. My mother was served in Alabama, she had no way to contact me, I'm a Georgia resident, and I have other bills this can happen to. Should I just bite the bullet and try for Bankruptcy?
I know the SOL might apply in either state, but the judgment was already made in Alabama. . .
