I am in California.

I was fired from a managerial position on the 27th of November.

I received a letter of dismissal at the end of my shift and was asked to return all keys. (I did this.) As the letter read, there were several inappropriate statements. There were statements about a financial loss which was “my fault.” There were also statements which were not even appropriate for the letter in the first place.

There was also mention of a previous catering job. The result of which was a personal loss of $130.00. I made sure all of the help was paid out of my own pocket. I was not reimbursed for that expenditure ad then he states that I am responsible for the financial loss which he suffered when he was the one who did all of the negotiating for this particular event. I was then blamed for this “loss,” because
“the net result of that was we were paid $195.00 less than we had contracted for, showing clearly to me he (the customer) was not totally satisfied with his experience with us.”
This statement seems a little out of place due to the fact that he was only out $65.00 and I was out over $100.00. This seems a little weird to me.

Here are my questions:

1. Do I have any legal standing to pursue in relation to the statements made in the letter of dismissal? I am also wondering, have there have been any slanderous statements made about me to potential employers?

2. There was a statement made in the letter:
“…before you become too defensive, may I respectfully point out that several other restaurants in this area have had to make the same regretful decision as I in the recent past.”
This raises another question: can I pursue a claim of slander against these previous employers?
