My question involves a security deposit in the State of: Massachusetts
I have looked over and over again through Mass Tenant Landlord law and can't find the answer to this question.
In determining the date of termination only for the return of a security deposit, if a tenant self-terminates before the rental period is over, what is the date at which the 30 days to return a security deposit begins? In other words, the tenant had a lease for a specific period of time but left 28 days before the lease was up. I returned the security deposit after the termination of the lease. He is claiming that I now owe him 3x (Mass law) the security deposit because the deposit was not returned within the 30 days of his leaving (I agreed verbally, not in writing, that he could leave early). Which termination date holds -- the tenant's or the leases? Thanks for your help
