    Exclamation Felony Theft Charges

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Tennessee

There is a 19 yr old who is going to be charges with felony theft. Her parents have practically abandoned her and she is currently living with us. She has no money and we do not have the means to help her in that way. She has made alot of progress emotionally and in respect to responsiblity since she began living with us. Her family has a history of mental illness. I need to know how i can help her deal with this. The major problem is that we are in one state and the charges are in another and she needs to return to face them soon so i am trying to help her prepare to handle this. She is a good child who has not had gudance until we came along and has not had any other charges in the past and did not do what she is being accused of. I need to know how i can help her deal with this situation as soon as possible. thank you for any assistance you can give me in this matter. Blessings to you all!

    She needs a lawyer.

If she cannot afford one, then she needs to apply for a lawyer through the public defender's office.

thanks.....i know she needs a lawyer but what can we do not to prepare her for the situation. she will probably have to take a public defender and we both know how over loaded they are in cases. she is just a child and she needs to be helped to prepare to handle this. she will be 6 hours away from us and with no one to help her there and probably have to be in jail. so i want to help her be prepared, she is very nieve. do u know anything about pre trial diversion?...could the public defender help her get that even if she has no money???
    Blessings.

Well the answer is in the question: She probably wouldn't get a public defender if she HAD money, so everything they do already assumes this. The system will steamroll over her without representation.
