    Default Roomie Mess

here's the situation in a nutshell:

my boyfriend and his 2 friends rented a 3 bedroom townhouse, one of the roommates has turned out to be a complete control freak, one example: if someone makes a phone call, he checks the phone and re-dials the number to see who they're calling, they have a DVR security system installed with cameras showing the front and back doors (they build computers for people and have a lot of expensive equipment they don't want stolen), anyway, control-freak roommate changed the password on the DVR computer so that only he has access to it and he sits in his room spying on us basically. He's been asked nicely 2 or 3 times to move out, that he's making everyone uncomfortable, and he refuses to leave, then leaves notes posted all over the house, one example: "Don't touch my stuff, i'm on the verge of flipping out, DO NOT PROVOKE ME." Oh, did I forget to mention that said roommate has several firearms, knives and swords in his room? He's always paid his rent on time, and hasn't physically harmed anyone yet, but that note sounded pretty threatening to me. We contacted the manager of the complex and we were told 'once someone is on the lease they have to stay on it until the end of the lease' and he won't leave. Anything we can do?

If your roommate isn't your tenant - that is, he's not a subtenant under your lease but is a named part to the lease with the landlord - your options are limited. Those options include attempting to buy him out, or waiting until the lease expires.

i believe there's 8 months left on the lease, i don't think buying him out is an option for us, though i've offered to pay for a U-Haul to move his stuff and to give him his part of the security deposit. is being worried about our personal safety a big enough issue to get him out? or does he have to actually DO something to one of us first?

That's about it - you need a lot more than "buyer's remorse" or "I don't like him any more" before you can get any help from the police.

the complex says they're willing to do whatever they can to help...is there any way THEY can vacate the current lease and make a new one?
