    Default Employee shoplifting charges

Hello - I was detained for employee shoplifting about three weeks ago. I was told that my yearly review was to happen and that I needed to come on in for it. I was then greeted by LP and questioned for over 65 minutes. I was not allowed to say much - just confirm what they had said. I admitted that I was wrong for taking what I did and they made me write a letter stated what I took (they gave me the amount - NOT what I actually stole) and to say I was sorry. I was also told that if I agree with everything that they said that I would not lose my job, the police wouldn't not be called and it wouldn't have to go further than that room. However the police were called in and they checked for any priors (of which I have none - not even a speeding ticket). I was fired from my job, banned from the store, and the police walked me out of the department store.
The next day - upon the store's request, and my compliance, I brought back the number of items they say I took. I was never allowed to disagree with the list and brought back the entirety of the list even though some I paid for elsewhere (or was gifts) and I didn't shoplift. I was scared and wasn't sure what I should do so I just did what they said.
They told me if they decided to press charges and go to court they would contact me. They also said that they will make me pay for anything they deemed I took and didn't return and would contact me on the amount I would have to pay back.
Its been 3 weeks and I haven't heard anything. Is there a time limit for these things? or did they just decide to not do anything more?
I'm worrying sick over this issue and I'm not sure what to expect, if anything, after 3 weeks.
    Please help! Thanks so much!

Default Fired from Employer for Stealing

If nothing has happened after three weeks, it is increasingly likely that nothing is going to happen. The passage of three weeks is far from adequate to cause the criminal statute of limitations to expire. As a practical matter, you can expect that after three to six months a prosecutor is likely to view the case as stale, which would make it less likely to proceed.

As the police have already been involved in the case, you may wish to submit a FOIA request to the police agency requesting a copy of the police report(s) from your case. It may well be that the police reports indicate that your employer does not wish to prosecute, and that the matter has been designated as "closed".
