Default DMV and Lost DUI Class Records

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I got a DUI in Oct 1996, it was my 2nd. As a punishment to myself, I decided not to drive for 10 years. Now I am having trouble getting my license back. I completed everything, fines, classes, etc.

I completed the 18 month course, but now the DMV has no record of it and the place I took the classes at only have records going back 10 years. I have moved a few times and lost my copies. So far, I have been told I was out of luck and needed to take the 18 month course again. I am posting here as a last resort. Does anyone have any ideas?

If you cannot document that you took the required course, the documentation is not on record with the state, and you cannot obtain documentation from the school, I don't see a way to avoid retaking the course.
