My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Texas/Louisiana.
My brother went to college about 2 years ago to a school in Louisiana and is now no longer in school. A few weeks ago I have been getting several calls from Sallie Mae and their collection agency regarding a student loan for which I never agreed to co-sign. I was never asked to co-sign on this loan nor did I sign any documents to authorize this. Furthermore, I have been living in Texas for nearly 2 & 1/2 years and was not physically present when my parents were helping my brother get in school. I have brought this to my mother's attention and she never admits that they put my information on this loan application as a co-signer and she quickly tries to dismiss this by saying that Sallie Mae has been contacting her as well as other family members which makes no sense to me. This whole ordeal has been very frustrating to me and I would like to resolve this situation. I contacted Sallie Mae regarding this and they suggested that I send them a letter disputing this account and reporting it as identity theft. I know that identity theft is a very serious issue and I do not want my mother or my brother to go to jail. I just want to rectify this situation and get my name cleared from this account. Can anyone please provide any advice?
