Default Common Law Relationships in Louisiana

    State of Louisiana
My girlfriend and I have been together for 11 years. The last 4 have been par at best. Over tht time our lives seem to have taken different paths. Two yrs ago I bought a house. All in my name and with my money. Also I assume ALL household bills. Regaurdlees of our convesations I cannot get through about contributing or setting asside money for retirement. Which I have. The only bill she is responsible for is her vehicle, and paying bills for her two adult children. In our "discussions" she is quick to remind me that she is entittled to half of the equity in my home. Is she? I have made her offers., but she always want more. I do not want to be cold. Just want to know how the law sees this. Patiently waiting,Trapped...

Your question is about "palimony". It is not widely rcognized in the U.S. and I was surprised to find that it exists in La. You may check out this link for some help.

I'll add another--you usually hear more about it in Cal. but a number of other states have recognized it too--more than I would have thought.

Sorry for the quality control - the link I removed was to a spammy site that provided misleading information.

Generally speaking, if somebody's not on the title to a home and there's no written contract giving them an interest in the property, when their relationship with the homeowner ends they get nothing. Louisiana does not recognize common law marriages. (That is, it will recognize valid common law marriages from other states, but you can't enter a common law marriage in Louisiana.)

Glad you jumped in. The info on the other link did not sound right to me either but palimony is a strange creature anyway.
