    Default Name Change After Divorce Is Final

    I divorced in California in 2007. I currently live in Nevada. I did not elect to be restored to my maiden name in my divorce papers. Fast forward to July 2008, and my ex-husband insists I change back to my maiden name. I have no problem with that; however, I'll be moving to Massachusetts in the next couple of weeks, and I want to know how I go about changing back to my maiden name in Massachusetts even though I was divorced in California. Is it a simple process? Please advise, as I want to take care of this as soon as I get to Massachusetts.

    You do realize that you're not required by any law to do this, no matter how many times he stomps his foot, right?

    This page provides a collection of MA name change resources, including links to the relevant statutes and forms for Hampshire County.

    Obviously, you'll want to file in the county in which you reside, but the pages above give a good overview of the procedure.
