My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Nebraska.

Back when I was crazy, about two years ago, I had a checking account that went negative and I couldn't pay the money. The bank sold off that debt to another collector and then another collector bought it after that. I am just now hearing about the collection of this debt. I received their first written notice today, along with validation.

The validation they provided specifies the original creditor, original account number, open date and charge off date. All the information is correct.

However, the amount I am being asked to pay to this collector is different. They are tacking on about $400 more than the original debt, which was $969.87.

My question is - is it legal for them to tack that on? I will pay the original balance but I am queasy about the interest.
