Question Not Getting Copy of Lease Until Moving In

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the state of Massachusetts.

    Hello,

I'm a student in Boston and I've have recently signed a one-year lease. My Realtor requires $2500 in prepayments (1st months rent, realtor's fee and security deposit), but has also notified me that even after I pay (and having already signed the lease), I will not get a copy of the lease until I move in!

That seemed quite astounding to me, as I see no reason why I shouldn't get a copy of any paper that has my signature on it. She informed me it's common practice, but I've spoken to others who've recently moved into apartments and in most cases they got a copy of the lease they've signed.

The Real Estate company seems legit enough, but I'm troubled by this demand. Is this even legal?

    Thanks in advance!

Did you read document before signing? If not you should have if you did then I dont see any issue.

Of course I've read the contract before signing it. The issue is that if I don't have the contract, they can go ahead and do whatever they please. The contract doesn't only hold me responsible for my side of the deal, but also does the same for them. And in a tricky field like real estate, I'd like a tangible copy of the document I've signed, guaranteeing me my rights. I hope that makes sense.

What I'm trying to understand is whether they're obligated by law to give me a copy of a document I've signed. I'd assume they are, but I'm no expert. Does anybody know the answer?

    Thanks again.

My landlord did not give me a copy until weeks after move in but then I trust my Landlord. Look it over when you get it look for items that are not what you signed. If thats the case discuss it with Landlord and if dispute continues find an Attorney
