My question involves name change laws in the State of: Texas
I went to court for my child support, visitation, etc. I feel as though I should have said something then, but failed to do so and really did not want to go along with what was decided on our child's last name. Our mediator asked what name was wanted for our child, the father replied with his last name and I didn't say anything at first in fear of argument. However; after a few minutes I asked the mediators if I could speak with the father privately. I told the father that I wanted to at least hyphenate our son's last name. The father said that he would allow for my last name to remain with an uderstanding that the child support would be lowered to $150.00, but for no other reason he wouldn't allow this. He wanted a payment reduction in exchange for the name. I didn't agree with this because accepting the $150.00 arrangement a month would mean my son's financial needs and well-being would not be met. The mediators returned and I explained that I really didn't want the father's last name as the last name and wanted it hyphenated; however, I didn't want to waste my time and energy on something that I knew the father would argue with me about. I feel I should have disclosed that the father was trying to bribe me in some manner and I regret it now. Maybe the judge would have sided with me or heard me on this. Is there anything that can be done now? I fear that it is too late. Thank you for your time in to looking into this.
