Default Job Outlook After Possession Of Controlled Substance

[[/B]My question involves criminal law for the state of: CA

7 months ago I was arrested for posession of a controlled substance (cocaine). It wasnt mine but due to the circumstances by it being closest to me in the car the police officer charged me with it. The person whose it was did not own up to it so I was forced to deal with the consequences. Aside from that, I enrolled into a diversion program (pc1000) and completed it sucessfully. The charges will be dropped from my record in one yr. My question is: I am currently in college with a 3.5gpa, honors classes, volunteer work, etc. Have no previous record whatsoever. I intend on getting my masters degree and trying to get into homeland security. What I wanna know is, I will be done with college in approx 4 yrs (after grad school). With that period of time and good grades and outside volunteer work is there still a chance for me to work for a federal law enforcement agency like homeland security??? I am really concerned about this cause this has been something I wanted to do for a long time but due to my complete lapse in judgement I feel I ruined my chances. I have heard mixed stories from different people, from customs, to police officers, to lawyers.

    Thank you

I work as a criminal investigator for the federal govt. What I can tell you is actual fact from what my job intales. I am a senior investigator.

My background was checked for this job. If I had any type of conviction even as a minor, anything other then a traffic ticket I would never have been placed in my postion.

I go through a monthly review. They pull my credit report. I am NEVER allowed to pay any bill late, I am not allowed to have any collections on my record. I am never allowed to owe out more then 40% of my gross income.

Yes, you can earn good money. $120K a year may not seem like alot to some, but for me its great and it has great job security. However, you really have to be clean entering into this and maintain CLEAN in all aspects of life.

If you have any other questions please post them. I hope this all works out for you in the end.

I understand. Little correction is I wasnt convicted but I had made a guilty plea to the crime to be able to go into the diversion program. Currently I am a "pending felon"(even though what was found was a small amount, posession of any amount of cocaine is a felony in California) till may of next yr and at that point it would be shown as charges dropped. I assumed that at the federal level it would almost be impossible to swing due to this being such a disqualifying charge. In your opinion do you think this will disqualify me from all levels of law enforcement?? And is there anything you would recommend for me, such as certain agencies or professions related I should look into with a graduate degree?? This whole situation has me kind of dumbfounded due to me always wanting to be in law enforcement and facing realization that i may have to choose a different career field.

    Input much appreciated, Thank you

I am sorry about your problem. I am sure it is not a fun thing to go through.

But honestly, you know what you need to do. No need to beat a dead horse. There are plenty of good professions out there. Just pick one that matches your personality and your past.

I hope this all works out for you. Keep us informed and good luck.

For the type of job you are wanting, they will do a very thorough background check & will most likely pick up everything/anything adverse. They are not likely to miss any "criminal hx." They will pick from the applicants that are "squeaky clean" so to speak.

Are there any other lines of work you might be interested in?
