I'm 19. I got caught with $85 in merchandise at Kohl today, they called the police and the police gave me a paper with my court's day (which is July 29) after asking me what happened. It was my first offense and I had a clear record before this. My questions are:
- I did a little research in this forum before posting my question so I know that there is a way to reduced your charge from misdemeanor to infraction, so I am wondering if I can do this myself in court or it's better to have a lawyer for this. And if I do have to get a lawyer, how do I get one (PD)? (where do I have to call, etc...)
- usually, with case like, what would the punishment be? (I did ask the police this and he said fine and community service) but is it possible that I would get a probation ( I don't want to get one b/c I'm still in school and am receiving funding from FAFSA and I heard that the chance that I'm not going to receive the funding is very high after this, so I want to get an expungment as soon as possible [if I will be convicted] and probation usually takes more than a year, right?)
- and how much would the fine be?
