Default History Of Depression As Indicating Danger To A Baby

My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: Virginia

If a woman about to give birth said this to you: "I know that because of my history of depression I am more likely to develop postpartum depression and all the stories I hear about women with severe postpartum depression hurting their kids scare me. I want to get back into therapy and back on medication [she was off meds because of her pregnancy] ASAP because I am afraid of developing postpartum depression." Would you assume that she was having thoughts of hurting her baby and think that her baby was in any danger?

As someone who has suffered from depression my whole life, my answer and opinion is- No, not just no, but h**l no. The fact that the mother has stated this is extremely indicitive of her being an excellant mother, and a person who recognizes what could happen if she does not take care of herself.

It is very common for a pregnant woman to have to reduce or stop her depression meds during pregnancy. Now, if the mother were saying that she didn't have any worries, and did not feel like she needs help and meds again- THAT would be a situation to be concerned about. For this situation though, as long as the mother does go back on meds, there is very little to worry about, and she will nake a very good mother.

I also say not only no but HELL no! She is being a responsible and concerned mother,,, a good mother always wonders if she is being good enough while that question never even crosses a bad mother's mind.

To convince CPS you might try finding a psychiatrist who specializes in PPD and see if they can either submit an evaluation of the mom or at least point you to some scientific articles of journals that validate the mom's statements.

We already have a written statement from an independent psychiatrist stating that my daughter is not a danger to the baby. Something tells me, though, that this isn't going to satisfy CPS. We were served with papers yesterday to appear at a hearing next week regarding a Child Protective Order.

See, I don't understand that. Originally, she was seeing a psychiatrist before she got pregnant and for the first half of the pregnancy who allowed her to continue taking Prozac but took her off other meds. When she had to go off my husband's insurance and went on Medicaid, the Medicaid psychiatrists refused to see her or prescribe medication because she was pregnant. Now CPS is trying to make it sound as if she wilfully went off her medication against a doctor's orders. She is already back on meds and has seen by an independent psychiatrist who has stated, in writing, that she is not a danger to the baby, but CPS isn't satisfied with that. Our only hope is that we can make the Judge see our side when we go to court on Monday.

I never delt with a psychiatrist. It was always family doctors and the ob/gyn that gave me the meds. It was a family doctor who first gave me the dx. The ob/gyn's always made me go off during the first visit and then put me back on in the third trimester. 3 of the babies I had I was on medicaid.
Never had a problem and zoloft is the only thing I've taken for depression/anxiety. With the exception of the time I was preg in the first and second trimester I've always taken it. In the hospitals I never saw a socail worker any of the times. Just the wic breast feeding councler with all of them cause I nursed them all. I have no history of violance or sucide attempts. The hospital nurses while I was in there gave me my meds like i usually take them.

I doubt she will harm the child considering she is telling you exactlly whats wrong and she is willing to help fix it.

See, everyone I talk to seems to understand that except these people from CPS. Please pray that the judge understands as well as you do!
