My question involves emancipation laws for the State of Texas:
Our daughter may want to move out at 17. Several of her friends have done so, and she has hinted that she may do the same short of out right stating that she will. If she does in fact choose to do so, what is our legal ramifications if she get into trouble? Are we still held liable for her actions if she is no longer under our supervision? Is she or us as the parents either one required to go through a lawyer or the courts to complete the emancipation if she does in fact decide to do so?
My issue is this. If the state allows a 17 year old to leave home, and the parents are by law powerless in forcing the child to remain at home under supervision, how can we as parents be held liable for truancy or legal issues if she gets into trouble?
