    Default Truancy And Migraines

My question involves education law in the State of: Michigan
My daughter suffers from migraines that have been diagnosed by a neuroigist. But I'm being charged with truancy because she has missed so much school for which I have dr. slips for most everyday. I'm in a catch 22 either I send her to school with a migraine which would be neglecting her need to let it run its course, or I keep her home which makes her truant. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The issue being what? That you failed to document the medical problems to the school? Your daughter is how old?

Im not a Doctor but isnt there medication that she can take that will help her out.

Also I agree with Knowitall, If she keeps missing have you at least take her medical records to the school to make them aware of the situation. If she continues to miss school they can start slapping fines on YOU!!!

One more thing to think about, if her migrains are that bad have you thought about home schooling her.

Yes. It's called Imitrex. I took it myself until we figured out the root cause of my migraines and fixed that instead.

There's also Zomig, Frova, Relpax, Maxalt, and a couple others whose names escape me at the moment.

OP, see about having your daughter put on one of these. It really can be the difference between chronic misery and being a functional human being again.

I don't want to overstep my bounds, but as a migraine sufferer and the mother of one...it might be in her best interests to have allergy tests conducted, and she should be evaluated for menstrual migraines as well.

    Concur.

Migraines aren't just misery for the poor sufferer, they're disruptive to the classroom flow. If she is unmedicated for her migraines, it may be best to homeschool.

Thanks for your thoughts. She is on medication and I have informed the school of her condition. But yet they persist.

Then sign a release so her Neurologist can write a letter to the school's administration spelling out the reason she cannot attend school despite the fact that he's prescribed her the appropriate medication.

    Which medication is she taking?

I have signed a release so my lawyer can get her records from our family dr. and the neuroligist. She currently is taking 150 mg of nortriptylin daily. She is the youngest of 6 children. If I go to jail I lose my job no question. I have always tried to do the best I can to provide. I've had to same job for 20 years if I lose it no money, no insurance, nothing. I've never been in trouble with the law.

I'm curious. How much missed time are we talking about here?
