    Angry Ex-Boss Slandering Me To Others In Company

    My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Montana

    I have worked for a fortune 500 finance company for almost 5 years now. I have had numerous occasions since there has been new management in the district where my character has been questioned. I know the rules very well and nothing has ever been escalated to HR or the compliance departments, so they must know that the issues are not anything to even write me up over. I think they are petty and that this new manager does not like me for some reason.

    Anyway, I recently applied and was hired for a new position in another part of the company. The policy is that if someone is leaving to a competitor that instead of working your two weeks, you get paid two weeks and are asked to leave right away because of the fear of stealing client information. Although I am transferring within the company, I was still asked to leave because they felt like my heart would not be in the job and that my excitement for my new job would make all my co-workers want to transfer too. So, I left, but was told I would only be paid a week. I questioned it, but was told that is just how it is. I complained to HR and then out of the blue my boss called and said that I would be paid the full two weeks, but would not get my bonus, so I am still in the process of questioning that.

    I have heard from some of my old co-workers that my ex-boss has said terrible things about me that could potentially ruin my reputation and my new position if these things get outside the office. They are all un-true things she is saying and seems to be covering herself for something.

    How do I handle this?

    Have you tried talking to your ex boss?

    No, really.

    I don't know why, but people assume that their first call should be to a lawyer when they hear something through the company grapevine that may or may not be true.

    Talk to your new boss. Talk to your old boss. Find out what is being said.

    If it is truthful or your old boss' opinion, there isn't a thing you can do about it.

    I have spoken to my old boss and she denies ever having said anything at all. I understand that she is entitled to her opinion and that it fine, and I don't plan to get a lawyer or pursue anything legally. I am just afraid that she, being the liar that I have witnessed her being in other situations, is just telling me what I want to hear and then talking badly about me. I guess my feelings are hurt more than anything and I am glad I don't have to deal with it first hand anymore, but I am concerned that these things she is saying will pass through the company and to clients and my career will suffer. Should I just flat out tell her to stop even if she continues to lie to me about it?

    As far as talking to my new boss, I am not sure I want to open that can of worms. I don not know him too well yet, so I don't want him to think he made a mistake hiring me.

    That is your choice.

    Personally, I would rather my new boss heard the stuff from me rather than my crazy ex boss so that I could damage control, but that is just me.

    Thank you for your opinion. I am going to call my new boss and talk to him about this to see if he has even heard anything and take it from there. I just needed another opinion from someone on the outside.

    I did talk to my new boss and he did receive bad vibes from my old boss, but he felt he would disregard the comments and called my previous reporting manager that I have more history with to get his reference. He is still happy with his decision in hiring me and feels my performane will prove itself!!! Very exciting news. The best part is that not that this has been mentioned to my new boss, he is getting HR involved to deal with my old boss so that I will no longer have to be in the middle of it.
