Default Employer Put Stop Loss On Payment Checks

My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: California

I recently worked for an elderly lady as her caretaker. I have worked for her for at least 4 years. Recently after repeated abuse by this lady(from not wanting me to go to the bathroom, to not wanting me to take a lunch break) I decided to resign the position. I gave the lady my decision she said she would not pay me for my last days. I called the police department and they instructed her to pay me. She paid and I finished my day. It has been two months and now she has stopped payment and pulled back $6,000 dollars that she paid me in the last 5 months of my employment with her. Honestly I do not have the slightest Idea where to start I have a negative balance on my account. I believe that small claims is my best option. But due to the amount I was told that maybe I should go another route.Any help would be appreciated.

I would go the small claims court route. You can do that w/o an attorney. You can sue for up to $7,500 in Ca. in small claims court.
