Cool Being Sued For Finder's Fee On Illegal Work

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Florida. My wife and I contracted with an agency to find us offshore jobs, and the fee was to be 14 days pay, taken out of our paychecks. The job went fine until it went on a contract that required the following illegal acts: Working with an unqualified co-Captain, performing work that was outside of the parameters of the boat's Certificate of Inspection. We quit that job, fearful for my Master License if the Coast Guard boarded the boat. The day after we left, the boat was boarded, the vessel sent to port, and the co-Captain had his limited license revoked. We had not paid the full fee, and went to another job that I received from an internet resume. They are now suing us for the remaninder of the fee, and our contention is that when the job required us to break the law, the contract became null and void at that point, and we owe them no further monies. The fee would result in nearly half of the monies we had earned with that company. Am I right that there is no further obligation on my part to this company?

    Possibly.

What has your lawyer said about the situation?
