Default Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident

i was in an accident around 2-4 am on thanksgiving day, it was snowing out and there was ice on the road i went arounda sharp turn and slide off hitting a tree, the vehicle will end up being totaled. after accident i had no cell service in this area and walked down to a friends house about 1 mile away he saw how shaken i was and we went up to look at it. we decided to pull it off the road so that there wasnt any problems and left it at his house less then 1/4 mile away upon getting home i told my mother and she said to just wait til after everyone left that was there for thanksgiving to tell my father(we had about 30 people over). when tell him we decided to wait til the morning to call the insurance and everything else. the state police then came and said it was ahit and run even though i reported it and just moved it out of the way? is there anyway it could be justified as soemthing else? there was no property damage as the road is surrounded by woods and there is only a little bark missing, the last thing on my mind at the time was havign to report it i just was just worried how my parents would feel about the truck being wrecked. as i said the accident was reported its not like we tried hiding the wreck i dont want to have to worry abotu going to jail because i slid on some ice and hit a tree its ridiculous

Were you issued a ticket for a misdemeanor offense, or did they indicate that you would hear back if charges are filed? You should consult with a criminal defense lawyer either way, but if it is the latter your lawyer may be able to intervene with the prosecutor's office before any charges are authorized, and work out a reasonable resolution.
