Default Stopped By LP And Walked Away

I was in a store today(in Utah) and followed out by the store's LP. He asked if I wanted to come back inside and talk about what I had in my bag. I replied that I didn't have anything in my bag and that no, I did not want to go back into the store. He threatened to call the police and I told him that he could go ahead and do that, but I didn't have anything and didn't have to show it to him.

He followed me out into the parking lot and told me he was taking down my license plate information. I told him he could do that.

My question is, could anything actually happen? I'm worried now that I should have just cooperated, but as far as I knew I really didn't have to go with him, and I obviously didn't want to.

Well, you might be getting a visit from the police.

If LP has proof that you shoplifted, you might get charged for it.

That's what I mean, will the police really show up for that?

I don't see how he could have any proof, as I did not show him my bag. He says that he saw me put the item into my bag. But I don't see how that is proof as I left the store and he did not actually prove anything, you know?

I just want to be prepared.

    Yes, it is possible.

LP may have proof on camera.

I know you probably believed it was an invasion of your privacy to show him your bag but it might have been the best thing to do if you didn't take anything.

Now you may be receiving a visit from the police.

You could have solved problem by just openning your bag.

I know, and that's why in hindsight I'm worried.

I didn't go anywhere with him or show him anything but as far as I knew I didn't have to. It was a situation I'd never been in before and my first instinct was defiance.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.
