    Default OPM Background Investigation

My question involves a background check in the State of: DC

Is anyone here familiar with the background check process done by the Office of Personnel Management when applying for a federal job. Is it safe to assume that I am a top candidate if they are doing a background check. If someone says something bad about my character will that go against me? Also, I heard that a credit check is mandatory. I am concerned becasue my credit is really bad and I have not paid any bills in a little over 2 years and I am behind in child support. I have been unemployed for 2.5 years in order to complete school. I am also currently in court for another custody case. Will that show up as well and will it go against me.

You are asking a lot of questions we can't answer - it will be the employer's decision. You may/may not be a top candidate because they are doing a background check - they may have many applicants that they are doing background checks on. Most likely than not, they probably will do a credit check & it could enter into their decision whether to hire you are not. We don't know what someone might say about your character & how much weight the employer will put on it - sometimes they put none. How thorough of a background check is done is up to the employer - all background checks are not created equal. (It's hard to say what all will show up.) Usually for a federal job they do a quite thorough background check. To summarize we don't know how thorough of a background check will be done, what they will pick up & how much weight they will put on any adverse info. (The job being applied for sometimes makes a difference also.)
