Default Caught Shoplifting Perfume at Target

ok i got caught stealing a ten dollar worth cologne today and the security guards at target said that this is minor and it will go into TARGET's record for 7 years. The cologne was out of its box so my friends convinced me to steal it. This is my first time stealing and it was because of peer pressure. they also said that they will send me a civil demand. How much do you guys think i will have to pay? please give me more info so i dont have to worry about this issue in the next couple of days.

also when my friend and i walked outside the undercover TARGET security officer purposely dropped a 5 dollar bill and we returned it to her. Then she approached us and thanked us for being honest. Then asked me to go to the security room. What was the point of that?

    Default Shoplifting

As to the second part of your inquiry, she was probably testing you to see if she should let you go with a warning (and civil demand) or call the police.

oo thanks, but the cologne is worth only ten dollars and they said that they will send me a civil demand no matter what. is it fair that if i get a civil demand for 200 dollars just for trying to steal and ten dollar cologne?

    Default Excessive Civil Demands

Civil demand laws vary by state, and yes sometimes the amount charged seems disproportionate. But if the choice is between paying a civil demand and having charges filed, it's a lot cheaper than criminal court. I believe part of the rationale for the high fees many states permit to be charged is (a) there are administrative costs associated with issuing civil demands which the legislatures feel should be borne by the shoplifter, (b) shoplifters cause stores to incur expenses beyond the merchandise at issue, including purchasing and maintaining security tags, scanners and cameras, and paying security and loss prevention personnel, and (c) most shoplifters have stolen a great deal more merchandise than they are caught with, so perhaps the legislators are adding a touch of "street justice" by imposing a fine which reflects some of the unrecovered merchandise.

i got stealing at target today too. I took a 15.00 dollar dvd. The said that they will mail me a civil bill too, and I will ahve to go to court. I took it for initiation for my fraternity. I am kind of worried, can someone tell what might happen, this is my first offense ever commited.

I stole a 70 dollar item from target. Civil demand of 500 dollars. Ordered by court to pay 700 worth of fines. 3 years summary probation. And one day of book and release. I really got a horrible sentence... never steal guys. btw, this is in CA. judge said no division available for shop lifting. 3 other individuals were there for shop lifting that day. We all got the same sentence.
