    Default Downgrading Door Locks

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Oregon

I live in a large apartment complex where management recently downgraded existing double-locking front doors (locking doorknob with keyed deadbolt) to deadbolt-only locks (new non-locking doorknobs installed). We were told this is the "industry standard".

Aside from obvious security implications and possible increased insurance expenses for the property owner, I am curious if it is actually legal to downgrade in this manner.

    Thanks.

Yes, it is legal and is pretty much the standard for apartment communities.

Frankly, there are no security implications for non-locking doorknobs. Locking doorknobs encourage people to be lazy about locking, figuring that locking the doorknob is enough, not realizing that a locked doorknob is easily opened.

By taking away the locking doorknob, the landlord is forcing residents to think about locking up and using the deadbolt, which isn't so easily tampered with.
