Boyfriend Wants Green Card, I'm Not Ready For Marriage Yet

I'm new to this world, as my new boyfriend is on a tourist visa, and wants to make this his home. I'd love to marry him to rectify the situation, but I'm not ready, and am wondering if there's any other way for someone who's legally entered the country to obtain legal status (green card, longer visa than tourist visa, etc.) -- I know it used to be that people could study and take a test.

We've looked into student visas, working visas (he has a nonprofit that wants to hire him, but his lawyer said they cannot provide him w/ a working visa). Please tell me what you know and what you think his best options are.

Other than marriage and adjustment of status following marriage, I don't know of any obvious way for him to avoid the consequences of overstay. He should consult an immigration lawyer.
