My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
So a few months ago I was in Humboldt County visiting friends at the CSU Humboldt. My friends and I took mushrooms and I suddenly felt compelled to remove my clothing and walk into a public area. I did not hurt, yell at, or physically touch anyone. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital until I came back to my senses. When I awoke from the experience I gave an officer my name, he told me that I had been arrested, talked with me for a few moments and drove me back to my car. He cautioned me about the dangers of drugs and told me that I was arrested for Public Intoxication. I then drove home.
Yesterday I received a letter in the mail stating that I have an arraignment in Humboldt in a few weeks. I am charged with a violation of Penal Code section 647(f). I'm very happy that I did not face more serious charges (I'm also very happy that I'm okay). I'm just wondering what type of sentence I can expect and what sorts of things are going to be affected by this arrest.
Also, as a college student I do not have a lot of money. Since I am from southern California the drive up there is very expensive. Is there any way that I can talk with a public defender and minimize the number of trips I have to make. I don't really want to go on a 12 hour drive to hear that I need to come back in 4 months.
Any advice is appreciated.
