Default L1-2 Visum Extension Filed, No Ticket Received Yet, Can We Stay Past I-94 Exp Date?

My husband's employer filed for an extension on the L1 & L2 visum in March. The I-94 expires week after next and no news from immigration as of yet.

Do we need to leave the country prior to the expiration date on our visums & I-94's or are we allowed to stay as we have an extension filing pending?
If we need to leave the country are we allowed to re-entry on a tourist waiver visum (we're Europeans) or do we need to wait in our native countries until the extension filing is completed? (We're in NJ)

Thank you very much for any advice.
    L.

According to this document, you automatically have 240 days of continuing work authorization while your application for extension is pending, but your international travel may be limited.
