    Default My Child's School Attendance

Here in Colorado some schools have an online status of school assignments and attendance records for students and parents to go and view and gain information about how our kids are doing in school. My wife and I were looking at attendance of my two girls during the weeks they stay with my ex. I was surprised to find that my girls are late for school several times per week and are not even being taken to school many days. For example, this past week my youngest (in elementary school) was tardy or absent 4 out of 5 days. My oldest (in high school) was late for first period or absent every single day.

We went back and looked at past weeks and can easily see a pattern of my girls missing a lot of school. So, my question is what can be done? I have heard that not taking kids to school is a form of neglect is this true? If it is not the case then please move this post to the proper forum.

    Thanks

Is it possible that they were sick on the dates they were absent?

There was only one day that my youngest was sick. Apparently their mom just decided to let our oldest skip that day too (last week) and also didn't take them to school another day last week. They are late almost everyday they are with her which landed our oldest in detention last semester. We have been told that their mom lets them sleep in or she is just "running late" My recommendation is that the girls stay with me during the week and go to their moms on the weekend so that they are assured to be in school everyday and on time, however I don't know if this is something that the courts will see as serious enough to make a change if their mom doesn't agree outside of court.

Do you and your X live close enough to the kids so that they would be going to the same school, have the same chances to interact socially after school with the same group of kids, etc.?
If the answer is Yes, then I would do it like this...

    1. Print out their attendance records and (depending on the relationship) talk to write to your X and let her know that ditching class is unacceptable and that the kids also need to arrive on time.
    2. Tell your X if you don't see an immediate change in the girl's attendance that you will take legal action.
    3. Follow thru.

It is probably not legal neglect - but it is poor parenting. Actually - depending on the number of missed days - the school does have the right to have CPS investigate. You can get the specific number from the school district's office.
