Default What Should An Expert Witness Charge?

My question involves expert witness practice in the state of: California

I have been asked to be a expert witness on a case that requires me to travel. I've been an expert witness before, local, but now I have to travel.
How do I bill my time?

Q: How do I bill my time?

A: BEFORE you go to court, get it in writing from whoever subpoenaed you (let me repeat that: GET IT IN WRITING). Charge for the time you actually travel plus your travel costs.

The actual hourly rate is very dependant on what you are an expert in.

I would google your expertise and "expert witness" and see what others charge.

To buttress the point of the honorable judge, make sure you bill for your time on the stand, your time to and from court (usually at half or at a daily rate equal to 8 hours) and all expenses you incur.... including mileage to and from the airport if you fly.

An expert witness is someone who is at least 600 miles from home and charges $1000 per day!

I suggest getting a retainer up front. I bill half of my hourly rate for travel and charge from portal to portal. The retainer also includes expected travel expenses.
