I signed a non-compete 5 years ago when I started with a company in Minnesota. It was the basic 1-year general non-compete and unfortunately was not presented until I had accepted the job verbally and quit my previous job. I have the original document in my posession and I signed it, but it was never signed by the company or GM.

In addition, one year ago we were bought out by a large company and required to fill out new employment agreements with an addendum that stated that we cleary understood the new "employment at-will" doctrine of the new company. The new company did not address the old non-compete nor ask me to sign a new one with the new employment agreement.

I'm interested in starting a new business and would be greatful for any thoughts on my situation. I'm trying to eliminate suprises and seeking advice. I am going to consult a business attorney as well, but I would appreciate any thoughts here. Should I request a copy of my current HR file? Seek advice from an attorney?
