I am living in Boston, MA in a 3 bedroom apartment. We are living on a lease that expires at the end of August. One of our roommates and her boyfriend (who were sharing a room) announced she and her boyfriend were going to move out for March 1st two weeks ahead of time. They informed us that they were going to find us new roommates. They failed to do so. They paid the rent for the month of March (as they are legally obliged to, as they are on the lease), but are refusing to pay utilities.
Since they moved out with such short notice and failed to find a roommate for us, the fourth roommate and I are essentially stuck paying double the utilities we were previously (internet and tv stayed the same, gas changed negligibly). Everywhere I look says that they would be on the hook for 30 days after giving notice if we were in a month to month, but gives no mention for those in a lease. Am I correct in thinking that since they are still on the lease, even if they aren't physically living here, they should still be on the hook for their portion of the bills?
Thanks all!
Edit, I just realized there are several forums this could have gone in. If a Mod wants to move it, go for it.
