I borrowed money out of the NDSL thirty years ago. I defaulted and set up payments. Out of the blue, the Fed demanded the principle, interest and penalty fees in a lump sum. (Maybe I missed a payment, but I don't think so). After several dunning letters, I noticed a space on the back to record name and address changes. I told them I had changed my name to Michael Jackson and lived at 345 Medgar Evers Blvd. I never heard from them again. That was at least 15 years ago.
Now I want to go to graduate school. Every school requires the FAFSA. But when I fill one out, the report comes back that my name and Social Security number don't match. Therefore I am ineligible, not just for Federal aid, but usually also institutional aid.
Question: How can I SAFELY resolve this? Will I be imprisoned for fraud? I know there is no SOL for student loans, but what about a fraudulent action such as I committed?
Thank you.
