Default Age 18, Need To Become Independent In Indiana

Hello, due to recent family issues, I moved out of my parents home on my 18th Birthday. Now that I'm out, My school informed me to get an emancipation, is that possible, or even needed after age 18?
My parents are not providing any monetary support for college, but in order to apply for finincial aid, (specifically the FASFA), I must submit my parents financial status, which they will not supply to me, so I need to become an Independent.
How is it possible to claim myself, this also applies to taxes, so that my parents do not claim me in the future following this year?
Becoming an adult, is extremely difficult. I have a job which sufficiently supports myself. If anyone can provide any helpful advice I would appreciate it, my future career awaits for your response.
    Thank You,

    You are a legal adult.

If your parents will not give their financial information for the FAFSA, you will not be able to use it unless you can answer "yes" to the questions on the form that gives you independent status.

How We Determine Your Dependency Status

    Another interesting blog.

Talk with the financial aid advisor at the college to see if there are other alternatives.

hey, thanks for the advise, the blog really helped, I
planned on pursuing Purdue, in West Lafayette, so I
will contact their financial advisor and see if their is
any significant exemption from the regular requirements.
Now one more problem, my guidence counciler informed
me that I could not fill out the fasfa months ago, and the due date
was march 1st, could I still fill it out just to get the student loans?
Thank you for all the help.

Actually the deadline was March 10th, 2008 for Indiana; you did miss it.

    The FAFSA (FAQ's) states:

I don't talk to my parents. What should I do?

If you cannot answer Yes to at least one question in the Student Status Step of the FAFSA, you will not be able to complete the online FAFSA without providing your parents' financial information. If you do not have contact with your parents, you need to speak to the school's financial aid office. They will be able to provide you with options. We recommend that you speak to the school before filling out the FAFSA.
