I am 20 years old, and yesterday I got caught shoplifting at Kohls. I walked out of the store and two police officers came over and asked me to come with them and if they could have a look in my bag. I went with them and said okay. They took me back to a room where the cameras and LP was, and there were two other young girls in the room who also got caught, and I'm assuming that's why the cops were already there. The cops asked me if I'd ever shoplifted before, and I said no, and they said that the LP has me on camera shoplifting there before. I said that they can't prove that I shoplifted before, and they didn't say anything else. Once I was back in the room, they took everything out of my purse, including my license and wallet and went through EVERYTHING. LP took a picture of me and my license, and gave me a peice of paper to sign saying I wouldn't ever come back to the store again. He said that the store could legally charge me three times the amount I stole, which was around $120. He said he was fairly certain his boss would want to press charges since this wasn't the first time they've suspected I was stealing. They didn't file a report with the cops or anything, and just said I could expect something in the mail regarding a court date and what I owe them and whether or not they would press charges.
From here on out, what should I expect? Can they charge me for the things they supposedly "have on camera" or will I just be charged for what they found in my purse?
If they do press charges will I be more likely to get a higher punishment since they THINK I've done it before?
I know the maximum fine is 6 months in jail and $1000 in Ohio...Will I be likely to get that or any jail time or what? I'm kind of worried about what's going to happen especially since they said they have me on camera and this isn't the first time they think I've shoplifted from them.
I have a completely clear record and have never done anything like this before. What can I likely expect? I'm pretty sure they will press charges and I'll have to go to court if they say they do think I've done this before.
Like I said, the cops didn't write a report or cite me then and there for anything, just got all my info and all that.
What now?
